The Department of Electrical Power Engineering is one of the various departments under the Defence Engineering College with a primary goal of preparing students for successful technology based careers. It was established in the year 1997G.C to generate highly qualified professionals and technical manpower in the field of Electrical power engineering for the Defence Forces in particular and the Nation as a whole. The Department runs a degree program, organizes and conducts short term training programs on the topics of interest for practicing engineers, technicians as well as technical teachers of various organizations, colleges and schools.
It is imperative and indeed a demand to look ahead for the department curriculum to meet the present and future needs of the country in the field of electrical engineering and to provide educational means to meet these needs. Thus to minimize the gap between the state of the art technology and the present teaching learning process, the department has successfully brought the changes in the curriculum that supports and maintain the relevance of educational standards in the field of electrical power engineering. The electrical power engineer of the department can work as a design engineer, technologist and maintenance engineer, as a researcher in research institutions and as a manager in firms dealing with production, service and trade in the field of electrical power engineering at various industrial, military and commercial establishments.
This new curriculum is developed by changing the name of the department in to “Electrical Engineering” and gives emphasis on the applications of engineering and technical knowledge to solve actual workplace problems. This is done through planned activities on practical problem solving, design capability, and laboratory work along with team projects and internship. The program is also aimed at meeting the needs of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) for application oriented specialist in the field of electrical engineering. They receive general engineering training including courses in mathematics, physics, and fundamentals of electrical engineering sciences, computer programming and interfacing, electrical measurements, materials science, humanities and languages. Besides, they acquire knowledge in electrical and electronics, analog and digital circuits, microcontrollers, power supply devices, design and technology of electrical systems.
This curriculum is revised due to the nationwide implementation of a new education policy which is developed to address the change in education policy and the need of the market by incorporating new courses which were not present in the previous curriculum.
Starting from the earliest historical backgrounds, the name “Electrical power engineering department” at defence engineering college (DEC) is changed to “Electrical Engineering department” as the result of curriculum revision by retaining the two streams under the duration of 5years program. These are: Power Engineering, and Control Engineering.
Field of Studies (Streams)
The Department of Electrical Engineering comprises the following two streams at undergraduate level for five years degree program:
i. Power Engineering
ii. Control Engineering
The Graduate Program has three fields of specialization; namely;
Power Systems and Automation
Power Electronics and Drives, and
Industrial Control
