Welcome to Ethiopian Defense University College of Health Science/EDU-CHS/
Health Sciences College was established in 1959 in the formerly Lilit Hospital (the present Torehyloch Hospital) to train Health Assistant. Later in 1993 it also began training in Nursing Program. As of 1996 it was organized as Defense College of Health Science in Janmeda, Addis Ababa. In 2001, the college again re-organized as University College as per the Council of Ministers Regulations No.68/1993, and become under Ministry of Ethiopian National Defense and was accredited by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education to train health professionals.
The College later upgraded at University level in 2020,under Ethiopian Defense University following the approval of the Ministry of Education based on HERQA’s evaluation and recommendations to discharge its national duty in health through educating and training competent high and mid-level military health professionals that render health services to the community in general and National defense members in particular.
Therefore, currently the college is running 21 health programs and conducting training, research and community services in three different campuses based in Bishoftu, Armed Force Teaching Hospital /AFRTH/ and Bella (Addis Ababa) respectively. Out of these programs, 13 of them are Undergraduate, while 2 Post-graduate and 6 are Diploma /TVET / Programs.
These programs are Medical Doctors, Public Health Officers, Clinical Nurse, Diagnostic Medical Laboratory and Radiology, Clinical Pharmacy, Environmental Health, Emergency Surgery (IESO), as well as in Midwifery, Physiotherapy, Dental Medicine, Operation Theatre Nurse, Anesthesia and Psychiatric Nursing programs.
For running this program, the College has 171 permanent academic staff members, and 40 par-timers. At present 624 students are attending their studies in the three campus. The college has so far graduated 3544 students of whom 1219 of them were in undergraduate, program whereas, 77 of them were in graduate program. In addition, 2325 were at Diploma and TVET level.
The college is led by a Commandant who is assisted by three Deans (i.e. Academic Dean, Research, and Community Service Dean and Academic Technical Staff and Short Term Training Dean and one Directorates, i.e. Human Resources and General Services.
