Public Health

 BACK GROUND

The department of Public Health was established 1990 as Department under the auspices of defense collage of health science. The department was started Upgrading Health Officer Training Program (UHOTP)” in collaboration with the defense main Health Bureau and Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) in 1993, to achieving the defense health workforce demand through producing the required number of graduates in the four years’ time. Thereafter, enrollment of generic BSc in Public Health students started since 2018/19 which still continues annually.

Since then it has played a crucial role in graduating competent public health workforce that actively engage in diseases prevention and treatment, educational programs (capacity building), policies development, services administration, research, and regulatory services for militaries, community and internationally during UN and AMISON peace keeping mission. The department has history of bringing new insights and innovative solutions to community health problems. Consequently, community engagements in the form of learning, clinical services and Community Health Practice are among critical interaction points for members of the community and students.

The department has magnificently expanded to give TVET program on Environmental Health. Consequently, in 2014, the TVET program was upgraded to BSc Environmental Health. Currently, the department runs Bachelor of Science in Public Health and Bachelor of Science Environmental Health.

So far 146 undergraduate,591 Health officer  and 212 Environmental Health students has been graduated from the department. Currently, (2020/21 academic calendar), 146 undergraduate, Health officer students are following their studies under the department.
