- Background
Under the Umbrella of Defense University College of Health Sciences, the department of medical laboratory was established in 1993 E. C in Addis Ababa and the College moved in 1997 to Bishoftu. Over the years the department has trained many laboratory professionals at TVET level- IV (3 years of training, medical laboratory service), post basic BSc degree (3 years, Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Laboratory sciences) andgeneric BSc degree (4 years, Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Laboratory sciences).
- Graduate Profile (BSc)
A student, who has successfully completed the Bachelor of Science degree in medical laboratory sciences, will be able to apply own knowledge, skills, and attitudes as follows:-
 Knowledge
- Determine the laboratory management policies, principles and operational procedures of the medical laboratory sciences
- Use own critical thinking to improve the medical laboratory knowledge.
- Familiarize with latest scientific findings to improve the quality of medical/ clinical laboratory services to satisfy the society.
- Recognize and interpret laboratory findings/results/ and correlate with disease pathogenesis.
- Identify the factors that affect laboratory tests and results and suggest appropriate scientific corrective actions within predetermined limits.
- Recognize the differences of communicable and none communicable diseases controlling.
- Confirm and verify right laboratory results through in-depth knowledge of scientific methods, principles and procedures.
- Establish programs to monitor and ensure the accuracy of laboratory tests.
- Recognize laboratory organization, logistic procurement, equipment setup and specification.
- Develop a system for planning, implementing and evaluations (auditing) over all laboratory work.
Skill
- Collect the right sample from right site and at the right times.
- Preserve, store and transport samples and reagents using appropriate preservatives and at proper places
- Referral specimens by proper containers and safe transporting mechanisms to maintain integrity.
- Prepare all specimens and reagents appropriately(scientifically) for its purposes
- Perform laboratory tests scientifically using standard operation procedures.
- Determine source of errors to improve quality laboratory results
- Develop laboratory standard operational procedures (SOPs) for laboratory tests.
- Establish monitoring mechanisms for ensuring the quality laboratory work.
- Monitor and maintain proper functioning of medical laboratory equipment and reagents.
- Demonstrate leadership and management skills in health/research institutions.
- Collect, document, retrieve and interpret laboratory data clearly and safely.
- Develop effective communication skill with the patient and the health team

- Provide professional services, leadership and quality assurance in clinical/public health laboratories.
