Background

As part of the national need, the Ethiopian Defense University College of Health Science has realized the need of Medical Doctors (MD) program to the military. MD program was started in 2007/2008 GC at Torhayloch Hospital (Armed Forces Referral and Teaching Hospital).So far, 127 doctor’s professionals (Medical Doctors) had graduated and have been to fulfill the Health service demand of MOD.

Apparently,  EDUCHS  has been conducting several undergraduate ,and graduate programs by extending its quality and enrolment that includes Masters in Integrated Emergency surgery and OB Gyn,   MPH, BSC in Public Health ( HO) , Environmental Health BSc ,Nursing BSc, Midwifery BSc, Anesthesia BSc, Psychiatry BSc, Dental health BSc, Physiotherapy BSc, Pharmacy BSc, Operation Theatre Nursing BSc and  five TVET  Level IV  trainings.

This curriculum is designed to help as a guide for the training of both generic and post basic Medical Doctors. It is organized in line with the new educational policy of the country. The curriculum has incorporated problem based and task oriented teaching and learning mechanisms to prepare the graduates to fully undertake the responsibility to execute the promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative health services.

It is strongly believed that training of Medical Doctors using this curriculum will greatly assist implementation of HSDP and the MDGs thereby bringing rapid improvement in the prevailing health situation of the military/ country.

This curriculum is designed and produced as an integrated, competency based, modular approach in which the basic sciences are taught simultaneously with clinical and community medicine. It is described in terms of learning outcomes, which define the knowledge, skills and attitudes (behaviors) so as to produce competent, compassionate, respectful caring and community oriented doctors for Defence and Ethiopia with internationally accepted standard of excellence.
